Well, many of us might have seen the *leaf-culture*, particularly in tree species. And this Coimbatore farmers has been popularizing for more than an year. Although it is species specific, it really works in some species.

Because we also do a large scale multiplication, we got super curious, while listening to leaf-culture. Out team visited this farmer in Coimbatore. Forest college is also currently promoting leaf-culture in some species. Our take was to try that in Eucalyptus. We tried in a small scale (less than 10000 plants) in macro as well as micro propagation. We got the rooting success more or less in similar to apical/nodal cuttings. The issue came when it comes to performance.
Tear is not only the expensive liquid, but the *most complex* liquid in the body fluid system with 1000s of enzymes and antibodies. Tear not only cleans/clenses, but protects the eyes against any microbes instantly. One of the most powerful immune liquid, which is hard to artificially re-synthesize.


Leaf-cultured plants took very long time (40% more number of days) to establish than the apical cuttings based plants, which is a huge disadvantage for us. While further planted the leaf-cutting based plants in field, we noticed a significant reduction in the performance due to the poor initial vigour.


For a nursery, leaf-cuttings might be a good business (because you get >85% success), but from a farmers' point of view, the performance is questionable, if biomass (wood yield) is of farmers' interest.  
Getting tear is good for eyes. So Keep Crying...!
 
One has to look at things wholistically.
