♂ vs ♀

Jokes apart, Let me (try to) break it down. ♂ vs ♀ w.r.t Independence in survival. For a while we will ignore plants, because subject in question is animals (Humans).

In Nature, most animals follow sexual means, while very few animals (such as Zebra fish; water flea; scorpion; some worms) are parthenogenetic. In vertebrates, it is extremely rare (Turkey; some lizards; some snakes) and some families of honey bees in insects. Essentially animals have evolved with sexual reproduction, hence developed XY chromosome pattern, that differentiates species with dimorphic sex. If we look at Nature more carefully, sexual means of perpetuation has stronger fitness than parthenogenesis, because it creates the necessary diversity in the species by design.

Having said that, any given species population fits well when ♂ to ♀ ratio is maintained. Skewness in ♂ <-> ♀ would lead to extinction. Essentially, this itself tells that *♂ & ♀ are dependent* on each other.

Now, let me get to the actual point. Reproduction being the biological objective of life, *♀ possesses the higher responsibility* by nature.

Now let me compare. ♀,

• Needs to share ~70% of genome to the babies embryo
• Needs to nourish the kid internally
• Needs to have higher metabolic energy (hormonal transactions) than ♂

Therefore, the ♀s have evolved with faster maturity level; higher internal energy; quantitatively higher sexual hormonal level (although it is for a shorter period). If I were to look at animals other an Humans, ♀s are generally larger in size (to balance the higher energy level).

On the other side, ♂s have evolved with less internal energy, but longer expectancy to cater the process of perpetuation, so that species as a whole gets better fit.

Now, let's look at this from cultural perspective. The culture has actually evolved in-line with the biological objective. Reproduction being the central theme, ♀s takes that responsibility, while ♂s just help to get that going. Hence ♂s have developed physical (external) strength to protect ♀s and facilitate the perpetuation.
